5 Feet of Fury

Every once in a while, someone will say to me…

“Kathy, you should be writing for XYZ Famous Media Outlet!”

I thank them kindly, then patiently explain that I’m actually forbidden by the nation’s Media Nepotism Laws from writing for any “real” Canadian publication, because my last name isn’t “Richler”, “Trudeau”, “Mulroney” or “Fulford.”

Or “Kay”:

“The real scandal isn’t what Ann Coulter said on CNBC. The real scandal is that she was on television at all, and that she has a syndicated newspaper column, and gives speeches all over the United States.”

So… Coulter doesn’t even have to speak to be offensive? If she just showed up on tv, and said absolutely nothing, this would still be a problem? No wait: the problem IS what she says, in “speeches all over the United States.” Me confuzed.

(Of course, I’m still confused about how a Christian expressing her hope that everyone would turn Christian one day is supposed to be “offensive” anyway. What’s the difference between that fond wish, and that of the radical Muslims who want a universal caliphate? ask pedants. Well, the difference is that Christianity is true, and Islam is false. Duh.)

Kay, who I believe is supposed to be a conservative of some description, takes issue with Coulter’s “anti-feminism” and habit of “insulting” “minorities.” He’s also baffled by Coulter’s perpetual “state of agitated ideological fury.”

Which in my circles is called “having strong convictions about Right & Wrong and being prepared to articulate and defend them.”

I keep forgetting that here in Canada, being “conservative” is only about.. well, I’m not really sure anymore. Gay marriage is in there somewhere, plus legalizing drugs. Something about “winning the ‘This Week’s Victim’ vote” in your “riding” and dropping “writs” on yer “referendums”… sooooooo sleepy…

Kay then declares that Coulter’s anti-feminism is “ironic” because — she poses sexily on her book covers. Now, it’s been a while since I read The S.C.U.M Manifesto or watched This Is Not a Love Story, but I always thought that “posing sexily on book covers” was kinda the exact opposite of feminism, so.

Kay winds up for a devastating game winning pitch, then chokes. No, Coulter isn’t “happy” or “tolerant” right now, because she was describing herself post-eschaton. (Look it up.) Which isn’t now. As for Coulter not being “Christian”, see above. These days, for the Kay’s of this world, “Christian” has something to do with “being nice.” And theological illiteracy is actually as much of a requirement for media employment these days as having the proper DNA.

I could go on — his column is as murky as a bad print of The Big Sleep — but I’m not allowed to. My last name’s not “Lewis”.
