“It’s also, underneath the thick veneer of jokes about porn, farts, pot smoking and masturbation, one of the more effectively pro-family films we’ve seen in years. While objectively a fantasy, Alison and Ben’s attempts to rise to the challenge of raising a child — a greater challenge for Rogen’s character, to be sure — are the backbone of the story, which never descends into diminishing sentimentality. The high-minded proponents of a putative Christian film industry might want to learn the lessons of a film like Knocked Up sooner than later and undo the damage done by decades of humourless prescription and plastic foetuses.
